Welcome to the Institute of Geophysics

Students will need to be enrolled by the 10 February otherwise a late fee will apply.

To apply for Geophysics courses please submit an online application to https://signups.victoria.ac.nz/oes/

The Institute of Geophysics provides a focus for teaching and research in geophysics at Victoria. It includes members of several Schools who have an interest in the physics of the solid and fluid earth. The Institute also has associated members from the regions research institutions who are collaborating with Victoria staff or otherwise contributing to Victoria's programmes.

What is geophysics?

Geophysics uses physics and mathematics to examine the structure, properties and processes of the Earth:

  • deformation and earthquakes
  • magnetism and gravity
  • heat-flow processes and volcanism
  • physical oceanographic and atmospheric processes.
  • At Victoria it includes solid Earth geophysics, and meteorology. Its application to the solid Earth has strong connections with geology. If you are interested in a combination of physics, maths and the outdoors, geophysics could be for you!

Careers

Find out about the exciting and varied careers in geophysics, and see where some of our graduates have gone to, in the August 2006 issue (no. 36) of Career View (a publication from Career Development and Employment).

Geology and Geophysics careers

A degree in geophysics is a passport to many careers, in New Zealand and overseas. The combination of maths, physics, computing and Earth sciences provides a range of skills attractive to many employers. Recent graduates have found jobs in emergency management, oil exploration, the IT industry, weather forecasting, engineering seismology, environmental engineering and in research laboratories. Those wishing a professional career in geophysics would need a 4th year (Honours or Graduate Diploma) or 5th year (Masters) qualification. A career as a research scientist generally requires a PhD.
