About Us

Welcome

The School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences (SGEES) offers teaching and research programmes in Geography, Geology and Geophysics and is associated with the Antarctic Research Centre. SGEES staff and students share a wide range of interests in the science of the deep earth, the earth's surface and atmosphere, the environment and people's interaction with it, together with the geography of economic, social and cultural development.

Undergraduate and graduate programmes are offered in Geology, Geophysics and Geography, which includes Environmental Studies and Development Studies along with graduate programmes in Physical Geography. Most courses contain practical laboratory and field work components. Strong postgraduate programmes with opportunities for involvement in research projects of national and international significance, attract students from all over the world.

Teaching programmes are underpinned by the rigorous and internationally respected research undertaken by SGEES staff. Specialist technicians and administrators support these activities, many of which are interdisciplinary. SGEES has purpose-built teaching and research laboratories and facilities, sophisticated computing amenities, and other programme-specific resources and equipment. Collaboration with researchers in organisations outside the School, the University, and New Zealand, contributes to a stimulating study environment.

Situated in the Cotton Building, the School overlooks Wellingtons' spectacular harbour landscape and its dynamic cityscape. From here there is easy access to national research institutes, libraries and archives, as well as to the myriad social and cultural recreation areas of our capital city.
