Trustees and Friends

Board of Trustees

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees - a group of successful and motivated graduates and friends of Victoria who bring a wide range of expertise to the Foundation. Trustees have a fiduciary responsibility to ensure all donated funds are correctly managed, invested and disbursed. The Trustees are:

Elaine McCaw
, Chair, BA, MA APPL
Director/Consultant

Elaine completed a BA in 1982 and an MA (Applied) in 1985 at Victoria University.  She has been a member of the Institute of Directors since 2004 and was awarded the Aspiring Directors Study Award from the Institute in 2009.  Elaine is a Director of Cormilligan Group, a company that provides a range of consulting services including strategy development and change management.  Elaine also participates on interview panels for the selection of for chief executives and senior managers and she provides coaching services for those seeking new a career direction or preparing for an interview. She was a founding Principal of Bell McCaw Bampfylde Ltd, a leading New Zealand executive search firm. She is currently on the Management Board of Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, the Board of Wellington Hockey, the New Zealand Hockey Foundation and the Nominating Committee for the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation.

Graham Archer, BCA
Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers

Graham graduated with a BCA from Victoria University.  He is a member of the Institute of Accountants and partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers specialising in Private Client Services and Emerging Business.

Gerard Curry
, BA, LLM (with distinction)
Barrister, Argyle Chambers

Gerard is a Barrister with chambers in Auckland and Whangarei and a national focus to his practice.  He has significant experience in governance, administrative and public law and in disputes resolution.  He was a litigation partner at Russell McVeagh for 32 years (at various times also Chairman of the Partnership, of the Board, of the Litigation Group and of the Ethics Committee).  Gerard is a former Editor of Salient, and former President of the Victoria University Students’ Association.  He taught Law at Victoria University for two years.

Roger Drummond
, LLB, BCA, Diploma in Accounting
Consultant, Gibson Sheat

Roger is a graduate of Victoria University in Law and Commerce and practises as a Barrister and Solicitor specialising in banking, commercial law and Iwi economic development. He was a partner with Bell Gully for 23 years. In 2006 he became a consultant with Gibson Sheat and Kahui Legal.  He is also a company director and is currently Chair of Directors of Wellington Cable Car Limited, a Board member of The Correspondence School, and a director of Touchstone Capital Partners Limited. Roger has a keen interest in rugby, being President of the New Zealand Universities Rugby Football Council, and is a New Zealand Rugby Union and International Rugby Board judicial officer.


Charlotte Fisher

Charlotte is a former member of the Adam Art Gallery Advisory Board and Trustee of the Victoria University Art Collection Trust and the Victoria University Art Collection Funding Trust, from 2005 to 2007. She was with Harcourts Group from 1985 to 1998, where she was involved in high-end residential real estate sales. In 1998 Charlotte set up Ghurka Investments, which deals in farming and rural real estate, with her husband, Victoria alumnus Robert Fisher. Since 2006 Charlotte has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the New Zealand National Parks and Conservation Foundation, which raises funds for conservation projects. 

Prue Flacks LLB, LLM
Consultant, Russell McVeagh

Prue Flack’s graduated with a LLB from Victoria University in 1978 and completed a Masters in Law at the University of London (LSE) in 1980. She was a partner at Russell McVeagh specialising in banking and finance law for 20 years, becoming a consultant from 1 June 2009.  Prue is a director of the Bank of New Zealand and is a member of the Institute of Directors and other professional associations.

John Greenwood
, LLB
Partner, Greenwood Roche Chisnall

John has an LLB from Victoria University. At Victoria John captained the University First XI and New Zealand University cricket teams and played for the first XV at rugby. He was a partner at Chapman Tripp for 23 years and now has a boutique project law practice, Greenwood Roche Chisnall, in Wellington. John is currently Chair of the Trinity Schools Trust Board in Masterton, Moderator for the University Property Law and Equity papers for New Zealand Universities, Regional Commissioner for New Zealand Cricket, and Editor of the New Zealand Law Society Property Law Section, The Property Lawyer.scholarship winner


Ewan Henderson
, BSc, MSc
Currency Trader & Company Director

Ewan Henderson graduated from Victoria with a BSc in 1983 and completed a MSc in 1987. He has over 20 years' experience in the New Zealand financial markets, primarily in foreign exchange and money market trading environments. He currently heads a trading desk for an international investment bank in Wellington.

Ewan’s external business interests reflect a long involvement in the Wellington commercial property market where he is a Director of Heritage Property Group – a specialist property investment company whose core business is maximising returns from the stewardship of heritage buildings in the CBD. Other business interests lie within the hospitality industry where he owns some of Wellington’s better known bars/restaurants as well as a lodge in Marlborough’s Awatere Valley.

Rebecca Burke

VUWSA Representative

Rebecca is the representative of the Victoria University Students' Association on the Foundation’s Board.  She was born in Germany and graduated from Ruhr University Bochum in 2006 with a Master’s in History, Mediaeval History and Art History. Rebecca worked for a number of museums and cultural institutions in education and research in Germany before moving to New Zealand in 2008.  She is currently undertaking a PhD in the School of Māori Studies at Victoria.

Brent Manning
, BA
BCA Partner, KPMG

Brent is a partner with KPMG.  He started his professional career with KPMG in 1994 and was seconded to KPMG’s London office from 1997 to 2000. Brent rejoined KPMG Wellington in 2000 and was promoted to partner in 2006.  He graduated from Victoria University with a BA in 1993 and a BCA in 1994.  Brent is Chair of the Foundation’s Finance and Risk Committee.

Ian McKinnon,
QSO, Bcom
Chancellor, Victoria University

Ian graduated from Victoria University with a BCom in Economics. He also served on the Students' Association Executive, becoming Men's Vice-President in 1966.

Ian's career has been in the independent school sector, at King's College, Auckland; Eton in the U.K.; Wanganui Collegiate School; and Scots College, Wellington.

He later set up an Education consultancy advising schools.  In addition he was Chair of the Wellington College of Education for two years, in the period leading to its merger with the University in January 2005. and Chair of The Correspondence School for three years during its restructure.

He has served, and continues to serve, on various other bodies, including for a number of years the Waitangi (now Link) Foundation for UK - NZ relations. For his work in the UK on the New Zealand 1990 Commemorations he was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal. He received the QSO in 1991 for services to NZ in the UK and in 1992 was made a Freeman of the City of London. In 2005 he became a Distinguished Alumnus of Auckland University.  He is a Justice of the Peace.

Ian has been a Wellington City Councillor since 2004 and became Deputy Mayor in 2007.

Chris Moller,
BCA
Company Director

Chris is a full-time company director and is on the Boards of SKYCITY Entertainment Group Ltd, NZX Ltd, Meridian Energy Ltd (Chairman), New Zealand Transport Agency (Chairman), Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd, New Zealand Cricket Inc (Chairman), International Cricket Council, Westpac New Zealand Ltd and Wellington Regional Stadium Trust.  He is also a former Chief Executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union and Deputy Chief Executive of Fonterra.

John Rowley
, BCA, ACA
Director, JBWere

John started his business career after receiving his BCA from Victoria University, and has subsequently had almost 30 years in the New Zealand investment community. He has dealt with the New Zealand investing public at both a wholesale and retail level and has led businesses such as Buttle Wilson, Challenger and Macquarie Equities. John is now at JBWere where he is managing New Zealand clients’ investment portfolios. He is an accredited New Zealand Stock Exchange Adviser.

 

Helen Sutch, MPhil, MA
Pro-Chancellor, Victoria University of Wellington

Helen Sutch was a student at Victoria from 1963-67, member of the VUWSA Executive 1963-64, NZUSA Vice-President 1965-66, and represented Victoria at women's hockey 1963-66. She was active in the Drama Club and Committee on Vietnam, and organised a teach-in on Vietnam at VUW in 1966. She received an MPhil in Economics at Oxford in 1970 and was a Lecturer in Economics at VUW in 1971-72.

Professor Pat Walsh, MA, PhD
Vice-Chancellor, Victoria University

Pat was appointed a lecturer in Industrial Relations at Victoria in 1981.  He was appointed Professor of Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations in 1999 and was for many years leader of a major Foundation for Research, Science and Technology project analysing industrial relations in New Zealand. 

He has served as Associate Dean in the Faculty of Commerce and Administration, Head of the Victoria Management School and Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Commerce and Administration, and Pro Vice-Chancellor Research.  Pat is the author of numerous articles and several books.  He was appointed Vice-Chancellor in 2005.

The Friends of the Foundation are a special group of graduates and friends who, from time to time, give advice and expertise to the Foundation on its fundraising activities. The Friends include:

U.S. Friends of Victoria University of Wellington

The U.S. Friends of Victoria University of Wellington is an independent American non-profit organization set up to receive donations from tax payers in the U.S.A. to support the work of the University. The Board of Directors of the U.S. Friends of Victoria University of Wellington perform a crucial role in overseeing the raising of funds and grant making, and the Board has complete discretion and control over all the funds it receives. The Directors are:

The U.S. Friends is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt American non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law. The U.S. Friends accept donations by check, appreciated stock, matching gifts and planned giving including bequests.

Friends of Victoria University of Wellington in the United Kingdom

The Friends of Victoria University of Wellington in the U.K. is an independent charity registered in England. The Board of Trustees of the Friends of Victoria University of Wellington performs a crucial role in overseeing the receiving donations from U.K. taxpayers and in the decisions about the grants that are made. The Trustees have complete control over all the funds they receive. Donations can be made by cheque and the Friends welcome gifts of shares quoted on exchanges recognised by HM Revenue & Customs.

Because the Friends is a registered charity it can recover, under the U.K. Government's Gift Aid Scheme, the basic rate tax paid by any donor who is a U.K. Taxpayer, currently (1 January 2010) increasing the value of the gift by 28% at no extra cost to the donor or to the Friends.
