The Hunter Club
The Hunter Club, which is open to all retired Victoria staff and their spouses and partners, is a way for the University to keep in touch with retired staff members within its wider alumni community.
Members meet bi-monthly on Wednesday afternoons, with afternoon tea and a guest speaker. Speakers have included:
- Professor Nigel Roberts on the 2008 General Election
- University Librarian Sue Roberts, whose topic was ‘Creating a University Library for the 21st Century’
- Ian Athfield, Jeremy Perrott and Sally Woods from Athfield Architects discussing the Campus Hub Development Project
- Professor Charles Daugherty and Sue Keall on Victoria’s tuatara research programme
- Dr Dianne Bardsley, Director of the New Zealand Dictionary Centre, on 21st Century New Zealand English
Other activities of the Hunter Club have included site visits to areas of interest around the University. These have included:
- Te Puni Village, Victoria’s newest hall of residence on Fairlie Terrace, where members were shown over the new hall by Director, Liz Iversen
- The Victoria University Coastal Ecology Laboratory (VUCEL) at Island Bay. The laboratory’s Director, Dr Jeff Shima, gave an illustrated presentation on VUCEL’s research work and guided members around the lab’s facilities
- The School of Design in Vivian Street, where Head of School Professor Simon Fraser and colleagues discussed their work and led tours of the Design School’s workshops.
- The Wai-te-ata Press, where Director and Printer Dr Sydney Shep discussed and demonstrated the art of letterpress printing
