Dr Kristina McGuiness-King, Manager, Student and Academic Services, FHSSThe Faculty Student and Academic Services Office aims to enhance the student experience at Victoria by providing support to students in an accessible and timely manner. The services provided to students include enrolment, degree planning, credit transfer, approval of exchange programmes, examinations and graduation.

All Humanities and Social Sciences students are encouraged to take advantage of our services. The Student and Academic Services Office works closely with student support services, such as Student Health, the Counselling Service, the Māori and Pacific Support Coordinators, and Victoria International to ensure that our students have access to and are encouraged to utilise support services available.

The team also provides Faculty staff with academic administration services, including advice on drafting proposals to change courses, qualifications and major requirements, etc., compilation and compliance checking of all Faculty publications and the Faculty's sections in centrally-produced publications, maintenance of the Faculty website, executive assistance to Faculty committees and the Faculty Board and compliance checking of course outlines.

Services Provided to Students

Student Advisers

Student Advisers assist with admission requirements, degree or course planning, transfer of credit from other tertiary institutions, enrolment and general enquiries about both undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications. The Student Advisers support students throughout their study.

To ensure continuity of service, Student Advisers manage a particular group of students (see table below) throughout their study. In addition, all Student Advisers have other responsibilities, such as the coordination of recruitment activities or enrolment administration.

Students are strongly encouraged to use the online student services portal myVictoria. Computer terminals for students to use to change their address, for example, are available on Murphy Level 4, outside the Student and Academic Services Office.

Services Provided to Staff

The services provided to Faculty staff (and those in the wider University community) by the Faculty Student and Academic Services Office include:

  • the provision of executive support to the Faculty Academic Committee and Faculty Board

  • the provision of assistance to academic staff preparing academic programme proposals (e.g. statute amendments, new course proposals)

  • the coordination of all academic change proposals to ensure these are prepared in accordance with the University's and CUAP's approval processes

  • the coordination of other academic administration processes, such as policy development and implementation

  • the coordination of the monitoring and review of Faculty courses and programmes

  • the coordination of course administration processes in the Faculty, such as compliance checking course outlines, timetabling and managed enrolment

  • the coordination of the preparation and editing of the Faculty's sections of centrally-produced publications, such as the University Calendar, the Guide to Enrolment and the Online Course Catalogue

  • the coordination of the preparation and editing of the Faculty's publications, such as the Faculty Handbook and the Faculty Master's Guidelines

  • the maintenance of the Faculty website (in conjunction with the EA to the PVC/Dean).

Location and Office Hours

The Faculty Student and Academic Services Office (SASO) is located on Level 4 of the Murphy Building (MY 411) at the Kelburn Campus.

Opening hours are as follows:

Monday, Thursday, Friday: 9:30am - 4:30pm
Tuesday, Wednesday: 10:00am - 4:30pm

During enrolment and examination periods, the SASO may have different opening hours. These will be displayed on the SASO noticeboards and doors.
