New Zealand Chinese Language Week

On Thursday 15 September the School of Languages and Cultures' Chinese Programme, the Library, the Language Learning Centre, Confucius Institute, Wai-te-ata Press and New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) are celebrating New Zealand Chinese Language Week with some great activities.

We will be offering performances, displays, workshops, dance, calligraphy and martial arts demonstrations and lots more!

Here is the full programme:

All day: Kelburn Library displays and resources, levels 2, 3 and 4

10.00am – 10.30am (level 2, near entrance, Kelburn Library)

Opening performances: Lion dance, Library Waiata Group, English and Chinese talk

10.00am – 2.00pm (level 2, the Hub)

Language Learning Centre:

  • Resources for learning Chinese
  • A Cha and Chat station, including the chance to learn some Mandarin phrases
  • Chinese Word Wall.

11.00am - 2.15pm (level 2, the Hub)

Chinese Programme - School of Languages and Cultures and the Confucius Institute

11.00am - 1.30pm:

  • Origin and evolution of Chinese characters
  • Learn how to write five Chinese characters on the spot
  • Learn five Chinese expressions in 10 minutes

12pm – 12.45pm: Calligraphy workshop

12.45pm – 1.30pm: Gong Fu (martial arts) demonstration class

1.30pm – 2.15pm: Folk dance demonstration class

12.00pm – 2.00pm (Wai-te-ata Press)

  • Chinese-English bilingual zine making workshop, RB007
  • Exhibition “One Script Many Voices” that features Chinese letterpress type restoration project at Wai-te-ata Press

1.00pm: Performance and tour of the Chinese instruments, Asia Pacific Music Studio, MS303

9.00am – 3.00pm: Screenings of “Thin Ice”, Chinese subtitled film project involving Victoria staff and students, large screen in the Hub
