The Faculty of Commerce and Administration prides itself as a leader in the study of Management, Māori Business, Human Resources and Industrial Relations and Tourism.
The Victoria Management School and the Schools of Accounting & Commercial Law, Marketing & International Business, Economics & Finance and Information Management have established a number of specialised research units. These include the:
The University has also formed a research partnership with the New Zealand Institute for the Study of Competition and Regulation. The Centre conducts empirical and conceptual research on competition and regulatory issues. Its central area of expertise is Economics but other subjects, such as Law, are important to many of its projects. Its research is widely available and it also conducts seminars on its research that is of direct relevance to companies and individuals as well as to policy-making government bodies.

The McKenzie Centre has an active research programme that includes work on stepfamilies, family conflict and co-habitation, while the Ageing Institute undertakes multidisciplinary research to improve public awareness and policy. Local Futures is a five-year research project funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST). The project's goal is to enhance knowledge about the theory and practice of strategic policy and planning in New Zealand, and to assist in building strategic capacity and capability in the sector. The New Zealand Climate Change Research Institute (CCRI) was established by Victoria University to develop interdisciplinary research into all aspects of climate change. In particular, the CCRI recognises a need to better integrate social and natural sciences, and for independent analyses of response options as non-prescriptive inputs to New Zealand policy.
