Safety is paramount in all workshops. It is the policy of the Faculty of Architecture and Design, in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health rules and regulations, that the use of construction power tools and machinery be restricted to the workshop areas, and be restricted to use only during workshop opening hours with supervision, and to those students who are trained to safely operate the power tools and machinery.
Safety training in conducted during students first two years while at the school. In the first year students are introduced to health and safety and trade practice concepts during normal workshop use and supervision. During this time they are introduced to a range of hand tools and trained on drill press and bandsaw. During Orientation and the first few weeks of year two, second year students are trained on additional woodwork and metal machinery, and CAD/CAM digital fabrication equipment releavant to their program of study.
