Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary)

The Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) is a 180-point initial teacher education qualification that students can complete over 12 months of study. Courses begin in January and conclude in December. This programme is an integrated model of theory and practice where student teachers study about effective teaching practice while based in a school in the Wellington region across a year.

Minimum entry requirements to the MTchLrn (Secondary) are a three-year Bachelor’s degree with a major in a relevant teaching subject with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least a B in the final year of study and demonstration of appropriate dispositions to teach. Preference may be given to applicants holding qualifications that include majors in science, English, history, te reo Māori, mathematics, physical education, music, languages and geography. Subjects offered are dependent on enrollment numbers and academic staff availability.

Candidates will be selected based on their academic qualifications, grade point average, skills and experience, referee reports, performance at an assessment exercise and a satisfactory police check.

Suitable dispositions for acceptance into teacher education programmes include self-awareness, intellectual curiosity, passion for learning, appreciation of cultural difference, integrity, and aptitude for working with others.


Graduates will be critical, evidence base teachers who can develop the learning progress for each child they teach. They will have the skills and knowledge to develop student agency and behaviours to sustain positive inclusive learning environments. They will use inquiry based approaches to effect student learning and will teach in ways culturally responsive for priority student groups.


Courses are taught across a calendar year, between January and December. Students will be placed in a school where they will spend approximately four half days a week studying and developing their teaching practice over the school academic year. Students will have one day of timetabled classes on campus each week discussing, critiquing and extending their learning progress. Across the year students visit a range of schools to consider different contexts for learning and have some full weeks in school and some full weeks on campus. During the second trimester students spend seven weeks full time intensive in their placement school to widen and deepen their teaching experience.

Students learn through being mentored through a professional learning group and undertaking independent study . Throughout the year there will be opportunities for the students to explore and visit different school based learning contexts.

The initial student intake for this programme is limited to 30 students who will spend the equivalent of 19 weeks in schools in the Wellington area.

Admission and entrance

For entry into any teacher education qualification, you will need to be assessed and accepted by the Faculty of Education as suitable for the teaching profession. This involves meeting set criteria, having supportive referees, making declarations about any criminal convictions or health and disability issues, being proficient in the English language and successfully taking part in an assessment exercise. Applicants will be selected on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated dispositions to teach.

Interested applicants for the Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) should apply on the Online Enrolment System when it opens on 1 October 2016. Students must apply by 15 November 2016.

Shortlisted candidates must be available to attend an interview on 24 November 2016.

To be awarded the Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) students must complete 180 points from the courses listed below comprising nine compulsory courses and a choice of either TCHG 511 or TCHG 512.

Pathway planning

Students applying for entry to the Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) will have undertaken significant study in a teaching subject such as a major in a Bachelors degree or postgraduate study. As teaching requires knowledge and skills beyond subject content knowledge, prospective students should aim to develop some understanding of te reo Māori and statistics and where possible to gain experience of working with young people (for example sports coaching or leadership programmes).

Graduation and teacher registration

Students graduate in May following satisfactory completion of the qualification .

As a graduate of this programme you can:

  • apply for a teaching position in schools through New Zealand
  • apply for provisional teacher registration from the Education Council
  • be recommended by your employing school for full NZTC registration after two years (and up to five years) of satisfactory teaching.
