Overview

Conjoint degree programmes combine study in two teaching subjects with teacher education. You can combine a BTeach with a BA or a BSc.

The four-year programmes are designed to produce well-educated teachers who can teach to the objectives described by the National Curriculum statements in primary and secondary schools. They feature a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials and teaching experience in schools. They are taught on campus at Kelburn or Karori Campuses.

The BTeach component of each conjoint degree comprises a blend of theoretical study and classroom experience and successful completion qualifies graduates to teach at both primary and secondary levels. The programme focuses on:

• assisting you to develop your understanding of educational contexts
• general pedagogical knowledge
• curriculum courses which lead to the acquisition of knowledge and skills needed to implement the National Curriculum
• development of specific skills which will enable you to teach confidently and competently.

Admission and Entrance

For entry into any teacher education qualification, you will need to be assessed and accepted by the Faculty of Education as suitable for the teaching profession. This involves meeting set criteria, having supportive referees, making declarations about any criminal convictions or health and disability issues, being proficient in the English language and successfully taking part in an assessment exercise. Qualification Structure

The conjoint degrees are structured in such a way that study in your first and second years will be mainly in your teaching subject disciplines. The subsequent years introduce the BTeach components in combination with subject courses.

Your BTeach study starts in the summer trimester of your first year with the course EPSY 131 Teaching - What's It All About? and includes a week observing in both a primary and a secondary school. This study continues in the second year with one course in trimester 1, one course in trimester 2, three courses in trimester 3 and a four-week teaching experience in trimester 3 - two weeks in a primary school and two weeks in a secondary school.

In the third and fourth years of your programme you will spend one trimester of each year in full-time BTeach study. In these trimesters you will have teaching experiences totalling 14 weeks.

Approved Teaching Subjects

Students should normally major in one subject from the conjoint degree table, and will take a second subject (from a separate curriculum area in the same table) to 200 level.

If you wish to do two full majors in your conjoint degree, and/or choose your second teaching subject from an area not in your degree table (ie from another degree) you should discuss this with your Faculty Student Administration Office or with Student Recruitment, Admission and Orientation.

An alternative pathway into teaching involves completing a degree (with appropriate subjects for those aiming for secondary teaching) and then applying to enrol in a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE, Primary or Secondary).

In special circumstances selected courses from subjects outside this list may be approved for the 200-level subject. The individual programmes of all students will be the focus of advice and approval during enrolment.

In the table below, "BTeach Curriculum Area" means Curriculum Studies Subject and relates to subjects taught in schools.

Assessment

Assessment policy, the grading system and criteria to pass will be identified at the beginning of every course.  All courses have assessments comprising assignments, tests and may have examinations.

Programme begins: week of 5 March 2012

The first BTeach paper for students starting study in 2012, EPSY 131, runs in the summer trimester in January 2013.
