Overview

The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) (BA/BTeach(ECE) is a conjoint degree which combines a BA majoring in Early Childhood Studies with a BTeach, a specialised early childhood teaching qualification. This four-year qualification is taught on campus at both Karori and Kelburn Campuses.

The overall goal of this conjoint degree is to produce beginning early childhood teachers who are well educated and capable of engaging in continuing self-development as multi-disciplinary professionals working in a diverse society.

Admission and Entrance

For entry into any teacher education qualification, you will need to be assessed and accepted by the Faculty of Education as suitable for the teaching profession. This involves meeting set criteria, having supportive referees, making declarations about any criminal convictions or health and disability issues, being proficient in the English language and successfully taking part in an assessment exercise.

Qualification Structure

BA component (Early Childhood Studies major)

  • EPOL 113, 215, 317 and EPSY 113
  • EPSY 315 or another approved course from (EPOL, EPSY or KURA 300-399)
  • One further approved course from (EPOL, EPSY or KURA 200-399)
  • Eight courses from the BA schedule: three 100-level, two-200 level, three 300-level

The courses that make up the Early Childhood Studies major allow you to examine the wider education and societal contexts in which early childhood care and education exist. These courses orientate you towards understanding the different theories and philosophies that guide everyday teaching and interactions with children.

Students select a further eight BA courses from the BA schedule which allow you to pursue study in one or more areas of interest to you, and support you in becoming a well-educated individual who is able to draw upon knowledge beyond the discipline of early childhood education.

BTeach component

There are two strands:

  • Teaching and Professional Studies courses:
    EPSY 114, EPSY 115, EPOL 214, EPSY 211, EPSY 212, EPOL 316, EPSY 313, EPSY 317
  • Curriculum and Cultural Studies courses:
    EPOL 111, EPOL 112, EPSY 111, KURA 111, EPOL 211, EPOL 212, EPOL 213, KURA 211, EPSY 314, KURA 311

Courses in the Teaching and Professional Studies strand enable you to:

  • gain practical teaching experience in a range of early childhood settings in order to develop your teaching skills
  • develop an appreciation of belonging to the early childhood teaching profession
  • develop strengths in professional skills such as communication, human relations, ethical issues and working with parents and colleagues
  • learn how to plan and manage a whole programme.

Curriculum Studies courses aim to:

  • provide you with an understanding of children's development and an ability to implement the principles, strands and goals of the early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki
  • assist your understanding of different cultural, language and family needs. You also learn about ways to support diverse early childhood programmes.

Timetable

All courses have 2-3 hours of lectures and/or tutorials each week. Please check in the online Course Catalogue for details of lecture times. Students are encouraged to attend all lectures and tutorials.

You should plan to spend approximately 12-18 hours of study per week on each course.

Assessment

Courses in the BA/BTeach(ECE) programme use a mix of internal assessment and exams.

At the beginning of each course students receive a course outline. This contains all the necessary information about the course including the number of lectures and tutorials, the course content, recommended readings, and information about the course assessment.
