Alison J.Laurie

Senior Lecturer

Alison Laurie is a feminist and lesbian activist, theorist, writer, broadcaster and oral historian. Her academic interests include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender theory, history, culture and politics, the development of lesbian identities and communities and the theory and practice of oral history. This includes oral history and auto/biographical theory and practice as well as the cultural representation and imaging of women.

Alison developed the teaching of oral history at Victoria University with her course WISC 303 Oral History and Auto/Biography, as well as sexuality studies in WISC 203 Queer Sexualities, Cultures and Politics. Alison also contributes to many other courses in Gender & Women's Studies.

Alison supervises a variety of Masters and PhD students as well as supervising Honours research projects and practicum placements for Honours students.

Alison is an executive committee member for the National Oral History Association of New Zealand (NOHANZ); a trustee for the Lesbian and Gay Archives of New Zealand (LAGANZ); the Chair for the Arthur and Armstrong Charitable Trust for Lesbians and a committee member of the New Zealand Women's Studies Association.

Current Research Projects

Alison is presently researching the development of pre-1970 lesbian networks and communities in Aotearoa/New Zealand. She is collecting oral histories from older lesbians and gay men, and also archives for evidence of international links.
