Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)

This programme for graduates is appropriate for applicants with an undergraduate degree or primary teaching qualification.

The aim of this diploma is to equip beginning teachers to work effectively within the diversity of early childhood education services that involve young children and their families and whānau.

The Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE) programme values the unique nature of society in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Successful completion of this qualification enables you, as an early childhood teacher, to teach in a wide range of early childhood education services in Aotearoa/New Zealand and to be eligible for provisional teacher registration with the New Zealand Teachers Council.

Who Should Apply?

People who hold an undergraduate degree or a primary teaching qualification.

Timeframe

Full time for one year or part-time* for two years Programme must be completed within three years

*Delivery of the programme part time is subject to staffing and external funding constraints.  A decision regarding this option for 2011 will be made later in 2010.

Study Options

This programme involves attending classes on campus or online and completing blocks of teaching experience in early childhood centres. The requirements and content are the same for both modes of delivery.

The online option includes a compulsory residency in April at Victoria's Karori Campus. Students are responsible for the costs of travel and accommodation for the residency.

Programme Structure

To be awarded the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE), a student must successfully complete 155 points made up of all eight courses in the list below.

The list below shows the order in which the courses will usually be completed. Progression to Trimester 2 courses requires that students have successfully completed the Trimester 1 courses.

Trimester 1 (begins week of 18 January 2010)

  • EPSY 301: The Learner in Context
  • EPOL 311: Teaching and Pedagogy - Te Whāriki
  • EPOL 312: The Multi-literate Child
  • EPSY 312: Early Development and Relationships

Trimester 2

  • KURA 301: Mātauranga Mäori in Education
  • EPOL 313: Curriculum in the ECE Context
  • EPOL 314: Science, Maths and Technology

Trimester 3

  • EPOL 301: The Teacher in Context

Timetable

The timetable for the courses will be provided to students at the Orientation Day.

The first course EPSY 301 is a block course taught from week beginning Monday 18 January to week ending Friday 12 February.
