Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Adult Literacy and Numeracy) (GDipTchg(AdultLit&Num))

Introduction

This programme is designed for those working in adult education and training contexts, or who would like to work in such contexts.  It aims to develop graduates to teach adult literacy and numeracy within diverse adult education settings including in: polytechnics, Private Training Establishments (PTEs), industry and the community. 

The programme will emphasise the diverse needs of adult learners including Māori and Pacific Island, and the embedded study of literacy and numeracy within specific teaching and training contexts. 

Entry Requirements

An undergraduate degree, a teaching qualification, or equivalent professional  experience such as working in tertiary education and training. A number of Adult Literacy Educator Grants (ALEG) are available for this programme.

Timeframe

This qualification involves full-time study for one year or part-time study over two years with a
maximum of three years to complete the programme.

Programme Requirements

You must successfully complete the six courses shown below, usually in the order listed.
Two of the six courses require a practicum to be carried out either within a student’s own organisation or in an arranged placement.

Trimester 1

EPOL 280 Adult Literacy and Numeracy: Policy, Theory and Practice
This introductory course examines current trends in policy and practice for adult literacy and numeracy and the theories that underpin them.

EPOL 380 Assessment of Literacy and Numeracy in Adult Contexts
This course introduces approaches to the assessment of adult literacy and numeracy. Emphasis will be on frameworks and tools developed for use in adult contexts in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

EPSY 380 Teaching and Learning Literacy in Adult Contexts
This course focuses on teaching strategies and resources to promote the development of literacy in adult learning contexts in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Trimester 2

EPSY 381 Teaching and Learning Numeracy in Adult Contexts
This course focuses on teaching strategies and resources to promote the development of numeracy in adult learning contexts in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

EPSY 382 Challenges for Learning and Teaching Literacy and Numeracy in Adult Contexts
This course explores common challenges encountered by adult learners in literacy and numeracy and options for addressing them.

EPOL 381 Design and Evaluation of Literacy and Numeracy Interventions in Adult Learning Contexts
Students will design, implement and evaluate an intervention which supports literacy and numeracy learning in workplace, classroom or other adult context.
