Secondary

Teaching at secondary level is a rewarding career for a range of graduates. We offer teacher training that gives you the skills needed to excel in the classroom and pass your specialised knowledge in sciences, arts or commerce on to future generations.

Graduates of our programmes are qualified to teach in New Zealand secondary schools and are eligible for registration with the New Zealand Teachers Council. The combination of specialist subject knowledge and teaching skills is particularly attractive to employers, not only in schools but also in a wide range of other careers.

TeachNZ scholarships of up to $10,000 and payment of fees may be available to those studying to become secondary teachers in particular subjects. For more information go to www.teachnz.govt.nz or ring 0800 832 246.

Two programmes are available for those wishing to enter a career in Secondary teaching:

  • The conjoint degrees BA/BTeach, BSc/BTeach and BCA/BTeach - these full-time, on campus four-year programmes combine study in two teaching subjects with teacher education. Graduates of this programme are qualified to teach in Primary and Secondary schools

  • The Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) - this full-time programme is suitable for those with an undergraduate degree which includes two teaching subjects, and is available on campus or online. One subject in high demand may be sufficient for entry to this programme. Part-time study is available for currently enrolled students only who have already started their programme (prior to 2009 intake).
