Bachelor of Arts

The Faculty of Education offers courses in Education, Early Childhood Studies and Gender and Women’s Studies which contribute to the BA degree administered by Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Education

Education is an academic and professional study, which focuses upon contemporary issues of direct concern to those working in a wide range of education services, including teachers. Education courses give you the knowledge and skills to understand and assess education theory, practice and policy issues.

Staff teach courses linked to their own areas of research expertise in schooling and youth issues, educational psychology and counselling, education policy and theory, media and technology issues and young people, evaluation and assessment, early childhood, Māori and Pacific Nations education, and more.

Education graduates can continue study and complete a teaching qualification. Others find work in government as policy analysts or become specialists in a range of education services. Some become researchers. Some join the police or work in children’s or youth services. Others work in commerce or the community as educators and trainers. Some run their own businesses. The list goes on.

Gender and Women’s Studies

Gender and Women’s Studies courses seek to resolve complex and important problems by examining issues such as gender differences in areas of paid and unpaid work, and the gendered impacts of economic and social policy. Courses do not analyse gender issues in isolation but seek to contextualise them within a range of topic areas such as the development of feminist thought, the politics of difference, sexuality studies, language, literature and the visual arts and science.

Early Childhood Studies

Early Childhood Studies is a multidisciplinary field that explores the theory and practice of early childhood education, including child development theory and the history of educational practices.
