He Pārekereke

In the garden the ‘pārekereke’ is an area designated as a seedbed, in which seedlings are nurtured until young plants are ready to be planted out in the main garden. This part of the garden gives its name to the Institute. He Pārekereke was formally constituted in September 1995 as an Institute for Research and Māori Development within the School of Education.

Since its official recognition in 1995 He Pārekereke has aimed to provide a nurturing and protective environment for Māori staff as academics and researchers. This aim has been operationalised as creating a critical mass of Māori staff who will design and deliver courses on Māori education to all students but with particular focus on the development of a Māori cohort who will be encouraged to go on to masters and doctoral studies.

In 1996 He Pārekereke included Pacific nations education in its brief. Accordingly, the Institute aims to create a safe context in which Pacific nations educational developments will be facilitated.

He Pārekereke has followed four main areas of activity:

• Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses
• Contract Research
• Publications
• Resource Development

He Pārekereke is an integral part of Te Ako Matauranga/School of Education Studies and as a consequence staff take part in all activities of the school which includes course coordinating, lecturing, and tutoring.

The Institute is located at 33 Campbell Stree, Karori and runs its own monthly meetings, has its own strategic plan, and from time to time, when conditions permit, applies for and when successful conducts independent research for funding agencies.

He Pārekereke is a member entity of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, the National Institute of Research Excellence for Māori Development and Advancement hosted by Auckland University. Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga also incorporates staff from the University of Otago, The University of Waikato, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, Auckland War Memorial Museum, and Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research.

Some of the activities which are currently being run by staff at He Pārekereke, in conjunction with Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga are:

• coordinating the activities of the Wellington branch of the Māori and Indigenous (MAI) programme. MAI has been established in tertiary education centres across New Zealand to provide support and assistance for Māori and Pacific postgraduate students.
• providing research supervision and support for Māori and indigenous research interns based at Victoria University.
• hosting and organising conferences which promote Māori and indigenous scholarship.
• conducting a major research project about Māori youth and citizenship.
• maintaining active interdisciplinary research and scholarly networks with Māori and indigenous scholars both in New Zealand and overseas.
