Other CampusesThe trained and experienced staff of Victoria's crèches provide care and education for students' pre-school children. Undergraduate students can use three centres on the Kelburn Campus and one on the Pipitea Campus. If you wish to use these centre contact the Manager on 04-463 5151 or email childcare@vuw.ac.nz COMMON ROOMStudent kitchen, table tennis, pool table and other facilities are available in the Karori Campus Student Common Room adjoining the café. COMPUTINGComputer facilities are spread over a wide range of locations on all campuses. Karori facilitiesOn the Karori Campus, you will find computer rooms in Waghorn Block (Levels 1 and 2) and the SCS help desk in Waghorn Block (Level 2). Technical support is available from the SCS help desk Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm. Computers are also available for student use in the library. Opening hours are:
Computer suites provide access to PCs and Macintosh computers and printers. Email and file storage are available. Victoria's secure web portal, myVictoria http://my.victoria.ac.nz lets students access, manage and share information, register courses, update their personal details, participate in groups, and much more. Students also have their own Workspace, an allocated space to store personal files. Victoria's computers offer standard software such as Microsoft Office, the full Macromedia Suite and other specialised software like SPSS, Endnote, and Photoshop. There are charges for internet use and printing. Passwords for Vic's computer facilities are automatically generated when you enrol. You'll find your SCS username on your Confirmation of Study form. Your initial password is your student ID number. When you log on for the first time, the system will ask you to create your own confidential password. COUNSELLING SERVICEFree, confidential counselling is available to all students. The service is staffed by trained, professional counsellors who have a special interest in the needs and concerns of students. You can discuss personal or academic issues, relationships or general concerns. Individual sessions and group programmes are available. Karori Campus
Kelburn Campus COURSE ADVICEVictoria's Student Recruitment and Course Advice Office provides informed advice to all students about all programmes available at the University, information on University Entrance, the New Start programme, First-year Orientations and Enrolment Packs. Karori Campus Kelburn Campus FEESTuition fees are charged per point depending on the subject (determined by the course code). Other fees of around $350 per year cover your Students' Association subscription and student services levy. All fees are due the week before your course begins. HEALTH SERVICESThe Student Health Service offers confidential quality healthcare at Kelburn and Pipitea Campuses. An experienced team of doctors and nurses provides a wide range of medical care, and a number of specialist services are also available via referral, including psychiatry, dermatology and physiotherapy. Almost all students are eligible for a Community Services Card, which reduces medical, hospital, and prescription costs. Contact Work and Income to apply for a Community Services Card. After-hours medical care is shared with Wellington doctors at the After Hours Medical Centre in Adelaide Road, Newtown. For after-hours attention, go to the Wellington Accident and Urgent Medical Centre at 17 Adelaide Road, Newtown. Opening hours: 8.00am -11.00pm daily, phone 04-384 4944. At other times, phone the 24hour Healthline 801 611 116 for free health advice. They run free, year-round workshops and provide individual help with essay writing, study skills, maths and statistics, presentation skills, and exam techniques. The Student Learning Support Service website is particularly useful for students studying from a distance, and for part-time students. The Service offers support for Mäori and Pacific students and for students with disabilities or special learning needs. International students and those who are not native speakers of English can attend an academic preparation programme held in trimesters 1 and 2. Student Learning Support is available on the Karori Campus by appointment. Students can phone Student Learning Support LIBRARYThe WJ Scott library, one of five libraries in the Victoria University Library system, is a specialist library supporting educational research and research-led teacher education. The collection contains books, journals, audio-visual material, posters, and an extensive collection of junior fiction and non-fiction. The library also provides access to the online catalogue, electronic journals and databases, study space, equipment for document binding, laminating and photocopying and a suite of computers for student use. Join the library by bringing your Student ID card to the Issues Desk. The WJ Scott Library is open at the following times during trimesters 1 and 2: Monday to Thursday: 8.00am - 7.00pm Extended hours do not apply during mid-trimester and mid-year breaks. After the pōwhiri (welcome) onto the marae, students are welcome to use the facilities when no other function is being held there. Peihana Ruhe is the Taurima for Ako Pai Marae. Students are also able to access Victoria University's Te Herenga Waka Marae. It is a teaching facility and community-based marae on the Kelburni Campus. Delica Poi, Māori Liaison Officer based at the Kelburn Campus, gives advice on university study, planning programmes, grants and scholarships. Karori Campus Kelburn Campus MUSICOldershaw Block, the music suite at Karori, includes several well-equipped classrooms and specially-designed studios for individual music tuition. RETAIL OUTLETSKarori Campus CaféFood is available at the Karori Campus between the hours of 7.30am and 3.00pm. During the trimester breaks the café is open from 9.00am to 1.00pm. Special catering may be arranged for dinners and field trips. Level 2, Gray Block Kelburn FacilitiesVUW has a number of cafes selling hot and cold food and drinks as well as a kiosk in the Quad. The Student Union Building in Kelburn is the home to Mount Street Bar and Cafe, open from noon (Wednesday to Friday) during term time, as well as STA travel, the University Book Centre, and a bank (and ATMs).
