Postgraduate study

The School of Design offers a range of postgraduate qualifications, including certificates, diplomas, Master’s programmes and PhD degrees.

About our programmes

The School of Design offers a wide range of postgraduate options, from a graduate diploma to Master’s and PhD qualifications. Each programme is tailored to best fit a particular area of advanced design education. Our postgraduate programmes take full advantage of the world-class facilities the campus has to offer; this enables students to realise every element of their designs, challenge theories and present products ready for the industry.

Master of Design Innovation

The master of Design Innovation (MDI) is a 180-point master’s focused on research and innovation with a 90-point thesis. Ideal students will be interested in independent research towards changing the status quo of design through disruptive or breakthrough innovation exemplified through a thesis.

Master of Design Technology

The Master of Design Technology (MDT) is a one-year, full-time professional master’s degree that will provide students with the professional skills needed to work effectively in highly technical design professions such as game design, Visual Effects (VFX), exhibition design and multimedia design.  The MDT is technology-centric and builds upon the skills acquired in an undergraduate degree focused on digital technology. The MDT will be ideal for students holding a bachelor’s degree in design who are looking to up-skill with advanced techniques and high-tech professional practice. A 60-point practicum concluding the degree will contribute a substantial project to the student’s design portfolio.

Master of User Experience Design

The Master of User Experience Design (MUXD) is a one-year, full-time master’s degree, aimed particularly at industry professionals and/or recent graduates without an undergraduate qualification in media design, i.e. a conversion master’s degree.  The degree will build on the relevant skills these students have developed during their professional careers and/or undergraduate university study, such as problem solving, critical thinking and verbal and written communication.

Master of Fine Arts

A new Master of Fine Arts (Creative Practice) (MFA(CP)) is being proposed in parallel with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, for students who are more interested in pursuing careers in fine arts. This degree also concludes with a 60-point project, but with no particular alignment to the design industry.

Master of Design

The Master of Design (MDes) is comprised solely of 120 points of independent research (there is no coursework component). Student’s must exhibit an exceptional ability to work indepently and prove a thorough understanding of design research methodology to enter this degree.  In some circumstances this degree may be conducted by distance

Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in our School focuses on a thesis that produces an original body of research that expands the design discipline. Students work closely with two supervisors on largely independently driven work. Typically on-site, the PhD may be studied by distance in suitable cases.
