Profile

Lance Beath is a consultant and university lecturer who specialises in defence, security, futures forecasting and long range strategic issues. Lance brings to his consulting and teaching work thirty-years of experience in government (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ministry of Defence) and five-years private sector consulting. In MFAT Lance served in New Zealand posts in Jakarta, Washington, New York, Ottawa and the Cook Islands and as Director of the European and Australian Divisions. In MOD Lance managed the Strategic and International Policy Division where he was responsible for all aspects of the Closer Defence Relationship with Australia as well as New Zealand's defence relationships with the United States and other defence partners. Since leaving the MOD Lance has acted as Strategic Adviser to the Commander, PNGDF, taught into various staff colleges in Australia and New Zealand and undertaken consulting assignments for a range of private and public sector clients. Lance is also a Senior Visiting Fellow at the New Zealand Military Studies Institute and teaches postgraduate courses in Defence and Security Policy at the Centre for Defence Studies, Massey University and in Strategic Studies at VUW's School of Government. Lance has post doctoral qualifications from UCLA in the behaviour of liquid-liquid mixtures in high gravitational fields, a doctorate from Otago University in Theoretical Thermodynamics and a BSC (Hons) degree in Chemistry.
