Profile

Michael Green was a career diplomat for more than 30 years.  He served in New Zealand posts in Thailand; at the United Nations in New York; in China; in Indonesia, where he was Ambassador from 1997 until 2001; in Fiji, where he was High Commissioner (accredited also to Nauru and Tuvalu) from 2004 until 2007; and in The Netherlands, where he was Charge d’Affaires for three months at the end of 2009. 
 
In Wellington he worked in a number of divisions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and was for six years (1988-94) Director of the External Assessments Bureau in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.  Between October 2001 and November 2004 he was Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade responsible for Political and Security Affairs and, in geographical terms, for relations with Asia, the Americas, the Middle east and Africa.  After returning from Fiji in mid-2007, he was Special Advisor attached to Pacific Division and then Acting Deputy Secretary responsible for relations with the Pacific, Australia, the Middle East and Africa and for Information and Public Affairs, until September 2008.  He then served as Acting Deputy Secretary for South Asia and Latin America until June 2009.
