Profile

Ann Trotter, ONZM, Emeritus Professor, University of Otago, is a graduate of the University of New Zealand and the University of London where she completed her PhD at the London School of Economics. Her books Britain and East Asia 1933-1937 (1975) and New Zealand and Japan 1945-1952 (1990) are concerned with the international history of East Asia with particular reference to Japan and she has contributed to various academic journals and collections in this subject area.
She edited 50 volumes, Asia 1914-1939, published between 1991and 1997 in the series British Documents on Foreign Affairs. She was a member of the committee of the Dunedin Branch of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs and for a time its president.

She directed the University of Otago's annual Foreign Policy School several times. In Wellington, where she now lives, she is a life member of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs and a member of the New Zealand Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP). In 1997 she was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to historical research.
