Public Smposium on New Zealand, Australia and the Rise of China - 7 April 2011, Wellington.
China’s rise is reshaping the Asia-Pacific region and is the number one issue for New Zealand and Australian foreign policy in the first half of the 21st century. On 7 April 2011, the Centre for Strategic Studies and the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre hosted a public symposium on “New Zealand, Australia and China’s Rise”. 

The event brought together leading scholars and China experts from both sides of the Tasman to examine the impact of a resurgent China on New Zealand and Australia and the range of security, economic, domestic and diplomatic policy responses. Dr Raja Mohan, Sir Howard Kippenberger Visiting Chair in Strategic Studies
Dr Raja Mohan, the holder of the Sir Howard Kippenberger Visiting Chair for 2011, had a busy programme of seminars and public speeches during his visit to New Zealand February/March 2011.  A highlight of his visit was the Kippenberger public lecture at Victoria University, “The Clash of the Elephants? Great powers and Asia’s destiny". Listen to the presentation and an audio from an interview with Chris Laidlaw on the Sunday Morning programme on 6 March 2011.

Dr Mohan also held seminars with Government officials, NZDF staff, students and academic staff at universities throughout New Zealand, branches of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs and the Asia Forum.  Dr Mohan is the Strategic Affairs Editor of The Indian Express, New Delhi.  He is a leading expert on Asian security issues, in particular security issues in South Asia.

Seminar on Civil/Military Engagement
Professor William Maley (courtesy of the National Consultative Committee on Disarmament), spoke with CSS Senior Fellows and officials on civil/military engagement, with a particular focus on Afghanistan. 

Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific: New Zealand

Representatives from CSCAP:NZ attended the following regional CSCAP Track II meetings in 2011. 

13th meeting of the Study Group on Preventing the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Asia Pacific (21-22 February, Las Vegas). This group has focused recently on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. 

1st meeting of the Study Group on Cyber Security, 21-23 March, Kuala Lumpur.

3rd meeting of the Study Group on the Responsibility to Protect, (26-28 April, Phnom Penh).

2nd Meeting of the Study Group on Multilateral Security Governance in Northeast Asia and North Pacific (3 May, Seoul).

3rd meeting of the Study Group on Naval Enhancement (16-17 May, Qingdao)

New Zealand was not represented at the 1st Meeting of the CSCAP Study Group on Water Resources Security in South-East Asia (22-23 March, Ha Noi).

2010

Dr Muthiah Alagappa, Sir Howard Kippenberger Visiting Chair in Strategic Studies
Dr Alagappa, from the East West Center in Washington DC, was the Sir Howard Kippenberger Visiting Chair for 2010. He delivered the Kippenberger Lecture, “A Changing Asia-Pacific: Prospects for War, Peace, and Order”, and spoke to university staff and students around New Zealand, Government officials, NZDF personnel, and at public events hosted by the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs and the Asia Forum.
