The study of New Zealand music reveals a long tradition of textual sources informing the writing of new works. This paper examines aspects of that tradition across a range of genres, from art music to popular styles and offers students the opportunity to apply research and critical tools developed in the course of their study. This paper will be of interest to students curious about a range of genres, as the focus on text and music offers an opportunity for inter-disciplinary approaches to be embraced.
