Overview

Background

NZ has the fourth largest Exclusive Economic Zone in the world that is 18 times greater than its land area.

The sea dominates all aspects of New Zealand's life and economy, affecting its weather and eroding its coastline.

It is across the sea that much of our exports and imports are transported and it is the bounty of the sea, in fish, shellfish and minerals as diverse as oil, gas and iron sand that makes a major contribution to our economy.

CMEER is based in the School of Biological Sciences, conducting core activities relating to marine environmental, ecological and biological research.

CMEER will collaborate with other Schools and Faculties to include law, economics, public policy and humanities aspects in its marine-related research.
