Wellington Classical AssociationThe Wellington Classical Association holds monthly meetings which feature entertaining speakers from all over the world. Admission to meetings is free! Membership of the Classical Association is $5 for students and $20 for

July 2008: Jo Whalley spoke on Amazons and Wonder Woman. June 2008: Dr Conal McCarthy talked on classical themes in colonial New Zealand. May 2008: Jessie Maritz from the University of Zimbabwe talked on Classics in Zimbabwe. April 2008: The April meeting featured the launch of two books by Arthur Pomeroy (details can be found on these books by following the above link). It also showcased the Classics Museum's collection. Proceeds from the sales of the two books (in which all were sold!) went towards The Alex Scobie Research Prize in Classics. March 2008: Matthew Trundle spoke on his experiences on the 2007 Classics Greek Field Trip and excursion to Egypt. February 2008: Barbara Burrell from Cincinnati University spoke on Herod the Great and Caesarea. October 2007: Jasper Donelan, Classics Postgraduate Student, spoke on his experiences as an archaeologist on the Cycladic island of Despotiko, including unearting his own exciting pieces and meeting a movie star! September 2007: David Rosenbloom launced his new book and the ancient treasures in the Classics Museum were marvelled over accompanied with wine! August 2007: Catherine Trundle spoke on the Grand Tour of Italy from the 17th - 19th Century. July 2007: Douglas Olson from the University of Minnesota, spoke on Some things we DON'T know about Greek Comedy. June 2007: Elena Korka spoke on 'The place of the Parthenon Marbles in Greek Archaeology Today'. May 2007: Sarah Vidler spoke on Dangerous Goddesses. April 2007: Dr Matthew Trundle and students of the Classics Programme commemorated ANZAC week with an evening of poetry, song and video. March 2007: Associate Professor Arthur Pomeroy spoke on versions of the Odyssey on film. He is currently completing a book about the reception of Classics and ancient history in cinema and film entitled 'Then it was Destroyed by the Volcano' for Duckworth. October 2006: Dr. Diana Burton spoke on her area of speciality with her talk titled "The Hag and the Gentleman: Figures of Death in Ancient Greece". August 2006: Dr. Daniel Ogden gave a talk on "Magic in the Antiquity". June 2006: Dr. Matthew Trundle gave a fasinating talk which attracted many people on "Troy and the Trojan War Today". May 2006 : Professor John Davidson gave a very interesting lecture on James K. Baxter & Classical Mythology. He is currently working on a major collaborative project involving the use of classical mythology in the poetry of Baxter. March 2006: Professor Richard Seaford from Exeter University in the United Kingdom gave a talk on "Sex and Sacred Space". He is the author of numerous books and articles on the ancient world. The Wellington Classical Association was formed in the late 1940s as a forum for those interested in the Classical world. Almost 100 academics, university students and others are now members. Membership fees enable the Association to offer small grants to Wellington schools who teach Classical Studies and Latin, as well as helping cover expenses.
