The 2006 New Zealand Crime and Safety SurveyThis is the third national victimisation survey commissioned by the Ministry of Justice. The CJRC was contracted by the Ministry to undertake the survey. The fieldwork ran from February to June 2006, managed by ACNielsen (NZ) Ltd to whom CJRC subcontracted the work. The ‘core’ nationally representative sample comprised 4,000 respondents aged 15 years or more. There is also a Māori ‘booster’ sample of 1,600 – to allow better analysis of risks for this population. Others working on the 2006 survey are James Reilly (of Statistical Insights Ltd, who was involved in the previous survey) and Laurie Porima and Nan Wehipeihana of LLE Research, who are the Māori consultants. The Institute of Criminology was involved in the first survey in 1996 when Warren Young, then Director of the Institute, took the lead. CJRC was involved in the second survey in 2001, when Allison Morris took the lead. Although it is important to maintain comparability with the previous two surveys as far as possible to enable analysis of trends in victimisation, the questionnaire for the 2006 survey was nonetheless extensively revised to provide more information on the contours of victimisation. Most of the survey was administered using Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) techniques, but three components on violent victimisation were completed on computer by respondents themselves using Computer Assisted Self Interviewing (CASI). A report of key findings was released by the Ministry of Justice on the 3rd of April 2007. Further analysis of the survey data is underway. The following supplementary reports have been completed by CJRC: Additional information and reports based on the NZCSS 2006 findings can be find on the Minsitry of Justice's website. |
