This book examines the role of institutions in China’s recent large-scale economic, social and political transformation. The book considers whether institutions form, evolve and change differently according to their historical or cultural environments and if their utilitarian functions can, and should be, observed, identified and measured in different ways, and suggests theoretical and methodological adjustments in institutional analysis to allow a fuller understanding of the institutional dynamics of China’s transformation.
Dr Jason Young, research associate of the Centre, leads a research project investigating trends and issues in trade and investment between China and New Zealand. This working paper, first out of the research project, compares foreign investment in rural China by New Zealand‘s dairy co-operative Fonterra with Chinese investment in New Zealand‘s dairy industry by Chinese companies Bright Dairy and Shanghai Pengxin, and argues these investments represent new trends in the China-New Zealand relationship and identifies a series of challenges and implications to investing in the economic integration of China and New Zealand.
