Chinese NPPCC Chairman Jia delivers a keynote speech at the Centre to mark the 40th anniversary of the NZ-China diplomatic relations

Chinese NPPCC Chairman Jia Qinglin, leading a 40-person strong delegation in an official visit to New Zealand, delivered a keynote speech at the NZ Contemporary China Research Centre on the 17th April, 2012, as part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of New Zealand-China diplomatic relations.

40 Years of New Zealand-China Relations

Symposium marks 40 Years of Diplomatic Relations in Beijing

40th Anniversary in BeijingThe China Centre marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and China on the 4th of December at a symposium jointly organised by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in association with the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs and the National Institute of Institute of International Affairs (CASS). Keynote addresses were delivered by Professor Huang Haotao, Secretary General of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Professor Neil Quigley, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington. Symposium delegates included past and present ambassadors to China and New Zealand, public servants, academics and representatives of the private sector. Four panels discussed the evolution of New Zealand China relations over the last forty years across a variety of diplomatic, cultural and social, strategic and economic subject areas. Symposium marks the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of New Zealand-China Diplomatic Relations in Wellington

The China Centre cohost with the NZ Institute of International Affairs and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a public symposium marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of NZ-China diplomatic relations at Parliament on the 5th of September. The Rt Hon John Key, pictured left, opened the symposium with a keynote speech. The Prime Minister’s speech traversed the wide range of achievements of the first 40 years of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and China, covering politics, trade, investment, people-to-people exchanges and cooperation agreements. The keynote speech was followed by four panels that explored 40 years of politics and diplomacy, the social impact, the economic relationship and asked where to from here?

Wellington Conference on Contemporary China 2012: The Chinese Model of Modern Economic Development and Social Transformation

Leading China scholars from China, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand gathered in Wellington at this year's Wellington Conference on Contemporary China to debate what has been driving rapid economic development and social change in China. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Hon Bill English opened the conference, with a keynote speech, addressing primarily the issue of foreign direct investment in New Zealand.

Researchers Investigate Expansion of China-New Zealand Trade and Investment

Dr Marc Lanteigne and Dr Jason Young lead a research project that examines the political economy of New Zealand trade and investment in China and Chinese investment in New Zealand. The first stage of the project is to look at Fonterra’s investment in dairy farming in China.

Book considers the institutional dynamics of China's economic development

This book examines the role of institutions in China’s recent large-scale economic, social and political transformation. The book considers whether institutions form, evolve and change differently according to their historical or cultural environments and if their utilitarian functions can, and should be, observed, identified and measured in different ways, and suggests theoretical and methodological adjustments in institutional analysis to allow a fuller understanding of the institutional dynamics of China’s transformation.

Latest China Papers: Investing in the Economic Integration of China and New Zealand

 

Dr Jason Young, research associate of the Centre, leads a research project investigating trends and issues in trade and investment between China and New Zealand. This working paper, first out of the research project, compares foreign investment in rural China by New Zealand‘s dairy co-operative Fonterra with Chinese investment in New Zealand‘s dairy industry by Chinese companies Bright Dairy and Shanghai Pengxin, and argues these investments represent new trends in the China-New Zealand relationship and identifies a series of challenges and implications to investing in the economic integration of China and New Zealand.

Current Visiting Fellow

Chris Elder, former New Zealand Ambassador to China in 1993-1997, is a visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Centre. He will be taking the lead role in producing the publication of the two symposia te mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and China.
