World Without Fish? Industrial over-fishing in New Zealand and abroad

Summary of action points from the seminar

Note this is a summary – not all suggestions were supported by all speakers. For details of each speaker’s suggestions check out the PowerPoints below)

  • When you buy seafood, ask what species it is.
    • Avoid the red species listed on Forest & Bird's Best Fish Guide
    • Avoid the species listed on Greenpeace's Red Fish List
    • Ask your supermarket to stop stocking bottom-trawled species such as Orange Roughy, Ling and Hoki
The choices you make can make a difference. Some supermarkets in Europe and the USA have stopped stocking unsustainably caught species in response to consumer pressure.
  • Do some research and speak up. Write to Minister of Conservation Kate Williamson and Minister of Fisheries Phil Heatley, and ask them to:
    • Set cautious catch limits
    • Reduce bycatch
    • Create more marine reserves
    • Improve seafood labelling
Or write a letter to the editor or your local MP.
  • Obey the rules when fishing – whether customary, recreational or commercial – and call the Fisheries Hotline if you see potential infringements: 0800 4 POACHER
  • Don’t believe everything you read or hear about New Zealand fisheries, positive or negative. Be sceptical and apply the scientific method …
