"Fabricating Sustainability"
39th Annual Conference of the Architectural Science Association. 17 - 19 November 2005

Conference Details

39th Annual Conference of the Architectural Science Association. 17 - 19 November 2005

ANZAScA Conference Dates and Location

17 - 19 November, 2005

Schools of Architecture & Design, Lecture Theatre 2, 139 Vivian Street, Wellington.

Conference Brief:

Dwindling resources and increasing costs are but two out of the many reasons given for why we cannot continue to act as we have historically acted. This is as relevant for education as it is for practice or strategic decision making across the broad spectrum of built environment disciplines and it seems inevitable that sustainable values will become the de-facto standard. Our understanding of sustainability however is fabricated by the ideological and moral parameters to which we subscribe. The real question, therefore, is not one of whether we subscribe to sustainability but to which version of sustainability and in what context.

The general theme of the 2005 ANZAScA conference will consider sustainability in whatever form it is manifested but in particular as it applies to:

  • Human and natural environments
  • Construction
  • Digital
  • Education
  • Social, cultural and political issues

A programme schedule including details of keynote speakers will be available shortly.

Getting Around Wellington

Wellington is at the southern tip of the North Island. All roads lead to Wellington and it is the departure point for the South Island. Getting around the city is easy because it is so compact and most places are in easy walking distance. There is a good public transport system, with regular buses and trains throughout the city and outer regions.

Getting to Wellington

Wellington International Airport is only ten minutes drive from the city centre. There are regular buses, taxis and shuttles. It is a busy airport with regular trans-Tasman flights. Tourism New Zealand 's website has more information about getting to New Zealand. Look online for prices and flight schedules for the following airlines: Air New Zealand, Freedom Air , and Qantas.

Accommodation

There are many options available in Wellington to chose from but it is recommended that you book early! November has historically been a very busy time for accommodation providers in this area.

We recommend Hotel Wellington (formally Trekkers) as it is located directly opposite the School and in the centre of Wellington 's heart - Cuba Street . It offers a wide range of accommodation options from $99 per night.

Weir House is a student Hall of Residence owned by Victoria University of Wellington and has been providing accommodation for students and other visitors since March 1933. The House is located in Kelburn's 'Grand Circle', overlooking the city and the harbour, and is less than ten minutes from the to the city.

Or check out the Wellington Accommodation guide for more options.
