Emergencies
For Staff
For Students
Congratulations to Zoe Moore, the lucky winner of the Student Survival Kit competition.
What do you do in an emergency?
On Campus – Click here for an initial response guide to incidents occurring on Campus.
Off Campus – Contact the appropriate emergency services (Fire, Police or Ambulance) on 111.
Security staff are responsible for the safety and security of University buildings, property and people. Security personnel are trained in emergency response and are on site 24/7, 365 days.
If you have an emergency incident, see something suspicious or out of the ordinary then you should dial 8888 from any internal phone or 463 9999 from an outside line or mobile phone.
Safe routes
In an emergency leave the building through an emergency exit route – these routes are identified by green and white exit signage.
Smoke and fire control doors leading to the stairwells must not be kept open by methods other than specifically installed electronic hold open devices which are designed to release on a fire alarm activation. Wooden wedges can be a very real danger and will be removed during security checks.
Do not use lifts in the event of an emergency or fire alarm. Use the stairs.
Obstacles in pathways
Checks of exit routes are conducted regularly. These checks are to ensure safe exit from a building, and to check emergency signage. These checks are done by Security and Campus Care staff. Larger buildings have daily checks and others have monthly checks.
Stairwells and passage ways are not to be used as places of storage or where rubbish is allowed to accumulate. Any such obstructions noted during the security checks will be removed..
Emergency supplies for staff
Staff are reminded that they are expected to be self sufficient for three or more days in an emergency. Workplace emergency supplies should include the following:
-
Essential personal medication
-
Food – non-perishable, high energy, easy to consume i.e. muesli bars, chocolate/sweets, canned food etc
-
Warm clothing/wet weather kit
-
Good walking shoes
-
Water – at least three litres per person per day
-
Torch and batteries
-
Contact details for family.
A 'starter kit' comprising an A4 size cardboard box with emergency kit information and a 5 litre water container are available to all staff. Please contact safety@vuw.ac.nz for a starter kit.
Civil Defence Cabinets (yellow or orange) are installed throughout all four campuses. Any cabinet that has been tampered with, i.e. glass broken, keys missing, equipment removed etc, needs to be audited and restocked immediately. Please contact the FM Service Desk to report any damage.
