When to Look
Peak demand is in January/February when competition can be stiff and it may take weeks rather than days to find a place. The easiest time to find a place is November when a number of students with 12 month leases want to go home. If you sign up in November, make sure you have the right to continue in February.
Where to Look
Word of Mouth:
If you are already at Victoria, try telling everyone you know that you are looking for a place. Landlords often prefer to let to someone referred by an existing tenant rather than go through the hassle of viewings.
Noticeboards:
Check out the noticeboards around university and in local shops, especially supermarkets.
Newspapers:
The Dominion Post lists rentals on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Accommodation Finder:
The Accommodation Service has a listing service for people who welcome Victoria University students. We do not vet these places. Click here to use the Accommodation Finder.
Commercial Websites:
Some more sites you can check out for more accommodation listings:
-
This site has listings for both Flatmates Wanted and Rental Properties
You can also find listings if you google ‘Wellington Property Management’ and ‘Wellington Real Estate’ but these agents are likely to charge you a letting fee.
Getting to and from Campus:
You can use metlink to check out public transport from the places you are looking at to your campus. The bus routes that pass the Kelburn campus are 22, 23, 17, 18, 20 and 47.
