Weir House

Weir House, less than five minutes walk from Kelburn campus, has proud traditions, a vibrant community and a strong academic focus. Priority is given to first year students for its 315 places.

Rooms & Rates

Fully furnished bedrooms:

  • 210 residents in single rooms
  • 50 residents in set rooms (that is, two rooms with a door between them but one shared entrance)
  • 55 residents in twinshare rooms

Hall Payments

Fees quoted are for 2012.

There are 38 weeks in an academic year.

The accommodation fees are payable to the hall in advance in quarterly instalments. If you do not have a New Zealand guarantor, you must pay for each trimester upfront.

Accommodation fee includes all electricity, heating and water charges.

Note: There is an extra charge for heavy use of electricity.

Facilities

  • Residents have telephones in their rooms. Calling cards are needed for national and international calls.

  • Computer connections to the university intranet are available in all bedrooms. There is a computer room with PCs and wireless access in the dining room, study and some bedroom areas.

  • Two music rooms, three TV lounges (including SKY), two study rooms and a lounge; a large design/architecture space, a photographic darkroom and table tennis, foosball, and pool/snooker tables and basketball hoops.

  • Kitchenettes on each floor.

  • Three laundry areas with washers and dryers available at no extra charge.

  • Residents are responsible for cleaning own rooms and the kitchenettes. Common areas including bathrooms are cleaned by contract staff.

  • Very limited parking available on-site. Lockable bike storage area.

  • Modified space for students with disabilities, including wide doors, a lift and showering areas. Check with the hall manager for suitability.

Location

Weir House is less than five minutes walk to Kelburn campus and ten minutes to downtown Wellington. It is situated next to Kelburn Park and the cable car and overlooks the city and the harbour.

General Information

  • Weir House comprises a four storey building with three wings and, separate from the main building, an alcohol-free, three-storey building and two storey house.

  • The Head of Hall, Marie Wilson, is assisted by an Assistant Head of Hall, Finance/Administration Officer, a Student Welfare Coordinator, a Night manager and live-in Residential Advisors.

  • The Residential Advisors provide general academic support and Pou Āwhina provides academic support for Māori students. Study groups, peer writer and workshops are encouraged.

  • The buildings and surrounding grounds are smoke-free.
