Annual report

The annual report provides an overview of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s financial performance and a look back on the highlights of 2023.

2023 continued to be a significant year for the University from a research perspective, with the establishment of the Centre for Justice Innovation and Te Whiri Kawe—Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Projects led by our researchers were awarded grants in the 2023 Te Pūtea Rangahau a Marsden, the Marsden Fund and by the Endeavour Fund. Our staff were also recognised as part of the 2023 Research Honours Aotearoa Awards.

The University launched its two-year Disability Inclusion plan, setting out its commitment to ensuring that disabled staff and students are supported.

The University also launched He Waka Taukaea, an initiative aimed at building a lasting connection with Wellington region secondary school students.

In our role as critic and conscience of society, the University hosted an education-focused debate with candidates from five of Aotearoa New Zealand’s main political parties, in the lead up to the 2023 general election, which was attended by around 250 staff, students, alumni, and stakeholders.

Construction continued on the Living Pā site, which aims to meet the Living Building Challenge certification.

We ranked in the top 1 percent of the world’s universities for 18 subjects, the top 100 universities for 10, and the top 2 percent of universities overall.

The University was ranked in the top 100 internationally in the QS World University Rankins for Sustainability.

Our sustainability work was reflected in the Times Higher Education Rankings, where we ranked 58th out of 1,600 institutions around the world.

By reflecting on our progress each year, we will continue to improve the education and experience we offer our students, while also conducting research and introducing innovations that respond to the challenges of our time.
