How did it all go so horribly wrong? Immunity versus autoimmunity

Professor La Flamme dicusses ways in which can we use our knowledge of the immune system to treat autoimmunity or prevent it from ever happening.

Inaugural lecture - Professor Anne La Flamme

August 2016

Our immune system works to keep us healthy and free from infection, but sometimes the microbes outwit our immune defences and take up residence. When this happens, our immune system battles to minimise damage and optimise our health, often very successfully. Unfortunately, there is a darker side to this guardian angel, and if it becomes misdirected, our immune system can attack us and cause autoimmunity. Professor La Flamme discusses ways in which can we use our knowledge of the immune system to treat autoimmunity or prevent it from ever happening.

This is Professor La Flamme’s inaugural lecture as Professor of Immunology at Victoria University of Wellington.
