Victoria University of Wellington is one of New Zealand’s top research institutions. Our university is in the capital city, and our researchers enjoy collaborating with people from government agencies, business and major scientific and cultural institutions in Wellington and around the world.

Our research strengths are broad—and range from biotechnology, earth sciences and nuclear magnetic resonance to Māori knowledge, linguistics and law. A number of our researchers are also successful entrepreneurs who have partnered with business to bring new products and ideas to commercial markets.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) heads a team responsible for the oversight of research creation and dissemination.

Our PhD students are at the heart of our research culture and as well as having a Faculty of Graduate Research to provide support to our graduate students we offer a range of scholarships to help fund their work.

We also have specialist staff available to help our researchers access funding as well as experts who can help develop new ideas and products for businesses. Our researchers work successfully with government agencies, district health boards, Crown Research Institutes and small and large businesses to provide advice, support and solutions.
