International student experience
Victoria offers a truly international student experience with opportunities for those attending the University from all corners of the world.
Victoria seeks to ensure all its students are able to be globally aware and connected through the award-winning and innovative Victoria International Leadership Programme (VILP). This unique extra-curricular initiative has attracted over 1,100 registrants since its launch in 2008. VILP focuses on themes of international leadership, cross-cultural communication, global connectedness and sustainability and incorporates a range of linkages with internationally focused stakeholders, such as the diplomatic community in Wellington, the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs, the Asia-New Zealand Foundation and Volunteer Service Abroad.
The University also encourages its students to include a study abroad experience as a distinctive part of their Victoria experience. Victoria students have an exciting and extensive range of exchange opportunities available to them through Victoria’s formal links with over 100 leading international universities. The University also provides financial support for exchange students, including equity funding for Māori and Pasifika students.
Victoria is actively seeking ways to continue to enhance its relationships with its partner universities. For example, it is New Zealand’s first university to sign a double degree agreement (in 2010) with Peking University, one of China’s foremost university and a longstanding partner for staff and student exchange. The double degree agreement involves Victoria’s Master of International Relations and Peking’s School of Government’s Master of Public Policy. Supported by generous scholarship funding from private donors, this double degree offers young New Zealanders an exciting opportunity to prepare for successful future careers involving engagement with the Asia-Pacific region.
