Global programmes and partners

Victoria is committed to a range of international initiatives and connections.

Victoria has a strong commitment to international development and capacity-building in ways that contribute to enduring New Zealand connections with key parts of the Asia-Pacific region.

Examples are the Greater Mekong Subregion Tertiary Education Consortium (GMSTEC) and the ELTO (English Language Training for Officials) Programme that has provided English language training for several hundred officials in Southeast Asia since the early 1990s.

The University also receives one of the largest cohorts in New Zealand of NZAID students. These students are especially valued as future leaders of developing countries around the world and receive the highest standards of care and support while they are studying at Victoria.

Victoria is also New Zealand’s only university to have an offshore campus in Vietnam. This is helping to introduce New Zealand-style teaching methods in Vietnam and to encourage Vietnamese students to study in New Zealand, as well as continuing to strengthen a range of connections with Vietnamese universities and government agencies.

The University also has a number of agreements with institutions around the world to facilitate credit transfer and related arrangements that enable well-prepared students to begin their degree studies in their home countries and complete them in Wellington, receiving Victoria degrees.

Victoria also co-funds postgraduate scholarships with the Chinese, Chilean and Vietnamese governments. These scholarships assist in making international connections that help to drive the University’s overall research effort.
