New central building

About the new 3-level central building on Kelburn campus.

Welcome to the Hub

More than six years ago, staff and students at Victoria University began working together to transform the Kelburn Campus.

The brand new three-level central Hub building is the cornerstone of the transformation, and was officially opened by the Governor-General in March 2013.

To keep things student-focused, Victoria students have been involved in the design and planning for new spaces, and many student ideas have been incorporated into the project, including what furniture to use.

The project was designed through a partnership between leading New Zealand firm Athfield Architects, and Architectus, and creates 3,400 square metres of new space for students—that’s the same size as 13 tennis courts!

The Hub is giving our students a world-class place to gather for study, learning or simply to meet friends.

The Hub has three levels designed for different uses.

Level 1 is a relaxed space that combines cafés and shops with areas for socialising and informal learning. The space can be adapted to suit different needs with movable furniture that can be cleared aside for larger functions.

Level 2 has informal seating on a mezzanine level and a view over level 1 below.

Level 3 houses a grand reading room that is connected to the third level of the Library.

The reading room combines group seating and desks for individual study.
