Leading scholars on China and and Japan gathered in early December to examine the the experiences of modern economic growth and development of China and Japan, at this year's Wellington Conference on Contemporary China, an international conference organized annual by the China Centre. A key project of The Centre is to develop a National Online System of Access to Information on China (NOSAIC). The aim of this project is to develop a national integrated system of information on China. The system incorporates the experiences and requirements for information and skills of our New Zealand stakeholders and provides access to China related publications, surveys, databases and information that exist in individual industries, business associations, government departments, and universities in New Zealand.

Publications

 

This book examines the role of institutions in China’s recent large-scale economic, social and political transformation. The book considers whether institutions form, evolve and change differently according to their historical or cultural environments and if their utilitarian functions can, and should be, observed, identified and measured in different ways, and suggests theoretical and methodological adjustments in institutional analysis to allow a fuller understanding of the institutional dynamics of China’s transformation.

The book asks the question whether the impressive economic growth and development of China and India constitute a unique model of modern economic development. The book argues that 'development models' can be descriptive, explanatory and prescriptive. In the cases of China and India, there is a clear pattern of historical emergence of the new economic system in the two countries. Beyond that, in either the explanatory or prescriptive sense, evidence from the two experiences are not consistent to support popular development models, formulated largely out of the earlier development experiences; nor are they strong enough to call for (a) new development model(s).

Researchers Investigate Expansion of China-New Zealand Trade and Investment

Dr Marc Lanteigne and Dr Jason Young lead a research project that examines the political economy of New Zealand trade and investment in China and Chinese investment in New Zealand. The first stage of the project is to look at Fonterra’s investment in dairy farming in China.

University Research Project Looks at Competitive Advantage for New Zealand Service Firms in China and India

This two-year study on the internationalisation of New Zealand service firms into China and India, led by Associate Professor Val Lindsay of Victoria University, has recently been completed.

The findings were presented at five locations around New Zealand during March and early April in association with Export New Zealand, and supported by NZTE and MSI.
