The book asks the question whether the impressive economic growth and development of China and India constitute a unique model of modern economic development. The book argues that 'development models' can be descriptive, explanatory and prescriptive. In the cases of China and India, there is a clear pattern of historical emergence of the new economic system in the two countries. Beyond that, in either the explanatory or prescriptive sense, evidence from the two experiences are not consistent to support popular development models, formulated largely out of the earlier development experiences; nor are they strong enough to call for (a) new development model(s).
